I know (I think) the following:
1. Here in my American city, there are "many" transvestites.
a. Many of them come from a country that borders the United States.
2. Some of them make a living by prostitution.
3. Some men like to go to clubs to watch transvestites dance.
4. Some men become violent if they discover that the "women" they are dating are actually men.
5. Here in the States, a shorter word for "transvestite" is "trannie" or "tranny."

In Canada, most people (I think) believe transvestite to be synonymous with 'cross-dresser,' as someone who dresses as the opposite gender (according to societal expectations) but women who dress in suits or other attire aren't seen as such really; they would be labeled as professional or butch and a tomboy depending on the entire look.
Men who wear women's clothes though are judged more harshly except in big cities where it might be seen more. Even in that case, it is likely to get more attention and they are likely assumed to be gay.
I've never met any transvestites personally, only seen them around town, and I have heard that the shows in Thailand are big hits.
