we seldom use the adjective 青. 青 is the color of Cyan.
An example: 青山绿水 (which means beautiful landscape)
绿色 is exactly green. When you describe the color of leaves, clothes, eyes, green technology etc. etc., 绿色 would be much much better than 青, since a lot of people do not know what color 青 is.
