What does this sentence "Eventually, she contracted dysentery" mean ?

I saw it on Wikipedia . It is a sentence from a short description about Eileen Chang . Does it mean " She got dysentery " ? I want to know how the word " contracted " works here ? Thank you !

    Yes - it does mean she got dysentery.

    'Contracted' here means to catch a (usually infectious) disease. So - you can contract hepatitis, or contract syphilis. You usually wouldn't say someone contracted a cold though.
