I see what you mean. Depending on the accent, they can sound pretty similar when pronounced in pausa. حما is never used alone in Standard Arabic, though, only as an accusative possessor (مضاف منصوب). In MSA, the dictionary form of حما is حم. In colloquial dialects that use حما as a citation form, though, vowel length might be the most important difference between the two words:
