There's a literal glass ceiling and a metaphorical one. A literal glass ceiling is, well, literally a ceiling made out of glass. A greenhouse is an example of a building that would have a glass ceiling. Unless the greenhouse's walls have instead been made by transparent plastic, they'd typically be built out of glass, and that would include glass ceilings.

The other is actually more commonly used in rhetoric. It's a term that refers to wage inequality between men and women in America. I'll avoid any sort of arguments one way or the other about why it is this way or whether it SHOULD be this way, but for many jobs, a woman with the same job title and experience level of a man will get paid about 20% less money. Many places have stopped this practice, and some others continue it to the best of my knowledge.

Again, I'm not bringing politics into this despite my urges. Simply put, when some people talk about gender-based wage inequality in America, they use the term "glass ceiling" to imply that professional women are trapped by a thin and nearly invisible barrier that's preventing them from being treated as true work equals with their male counterparts, and they go further by arguing that the glass ceiling must be broken in order for women to soar to their new potential.

The glass ceiling refers to the fact that there is a prejudice against women being in positions of authority. It is not official or admitted by some people, so the image is one of a glass ceiling - something that you would not be able to see very well, but would still stop you from going higher.
"Many women are aware of the glass ceiling in the corporate world, even though most men in management do not want to admit that it exists."
