육 is used if found at the beginning of the word, and 륙 otherwise. However, 六月 is 유월, and not 육월.

I've heard that before Korean war words starting with ㄹ were quite common and later 한국 replaced starting ㄹ with ㅇ (thus family names 이, 임 instead of 리, 림 for example), while 북한 (조선 as they call themselves) preserved starting ㄹ, but got rid of all hanja, so every text in North Korea is written only with 한글, whereas in South Korea they sometimes use 한자 to distinguish the meaning and/or reading.. I've just heard it, can't be 100% sure about it, so.. :)
