    If you use A, you will have what is called a "dangling participle". "attempting" has to describe something, and the only thing that makes sense is "John". "John" is "attempting to reach his home." So, D. "It" in A refers to the bike breaking down, not the attempting to get home, so it is prescriptively grammatically incorrect.
