    "In" is a placement, where something has entered something else or a place.
    She is in the house.
    The ball is in the box.
    George went inside the building.

    "On" is also a placement of something. But it can also refer to giving something electrical power.
    The book is on the desk.
    She is on top of the stairs.

    She turned the lamp on.
    The car is turned on.

    I put my pencil "in" my pencil box.
    I put my pencil "on" the table.
