Iron ____ for weapons and tools in the Bronze Age following the Stone Age.

A. is generally used
B. generally used
C. used generally
D. was generally used

Note: When I think of this as a statement describing something happened in the past, I agree that I must use past tense. What if I see it as a scientific fact, a general truth; do you think A. would pass for an answer?
(I could be wrong, but I just want to make sure.)

Additional Details:

"a general truth" ==> "general truth"

Yes, A would be correct if the past eras were not mentioned in the sentence. If something is a scientific fact or a general truth, it applies to the present, so the present tense is used.
