Is " a memory of hers" correct? and why?

I found this sentence:She was there when her son “read” to the preschoolers—a memoryof hers “that will never go away.”

    Yes, it is very confusing.

    In English, we canNOT say something like:

    "It is A HER memory that will never go away." So we must say: It is A memory OF herS that will never go away.


    NOT: Tom is A my FRIEND . BUT: Tom is A FRIEND of MINE.


    I found a book of YOURS.
    I am a cousin of HIS.
    I am a student of HERS.
    That Cadillac is a car of OURS.
    Have you seen that beautiful house of THEIRS?
