Latin pronunciation

There are several kinds of pronunciation of Latin -- Italian, German, and the archaic pronunciation. The last one, according to some researchers, was the way the ancient sages, like Cicero and Horace, employed when they gave an oration. I also find Americans have their own way to pronounce Latin words, but it's really a far cry from the other three. ( Maybe it's a bit too American.) Which pronunciation of Latin is most widely used? And which one of them is the most appropriate in your opinion?
Gratias! Thank you very much!
