"Voi" is the informal plural form of the informal second person singular 'tu'.

Historically, the form has been known to take the place of 'tu'. That was done by the speaker to be polite and show respect to a special listener. But that style isn't common in conversational or contemporary Italian any more.

In other words, are you reading a novel that was written a while ago, or describing something in the past, so that it is written in a form of Italian as it was spoken in the past?
