    A is correct: indirect object, direct object. B is incorrect: it just doesnt work for me.

    You could *reverse* it and say, "He asked the names of the two witnesses.", which could mean either he asked (someone (anyone), an implict indirect object) the two witnesses' names or he asked the witnesses their names.

    There is no difference. (A) sounds better to me though.

    A is correct.
