How to use the particle ga が to connect phrases

I'm studying this topic right now but I'm not sure how to use the particle ga to connect two phrases.

The example in my book is:
"nihon no tabemono wa oishii desu ga, takai desu"

Here I can see it is used as "but" in english, in the sense that first I say something good and then i add something "bad", but i'd like to know if I can use it even in the opposite type of sentence, such as

watashi wa doyoubi ni hima ja arimasen ga, nichiyoubi ni wa hima desu.

I hope someone can help me!

Yes, you can use が in that case :)
And as a native speaker of Japanese, I prefer to say:
    I hope this helps.
