Please can you explain how 真的假的 works

I saw this sentence today '真的假的?' The translation given was 'Is that true?'

How does the grammar work? When I first read it I understood it as 'Is that really not true?

Meaning I read it to be:真的Really (是)假的not true(吗) ?'

Should I read this more like a short version of maybe 是真的吗?是假的吗?

It's a very colloquial way to ask "really, is that true?" (with a slight sense of disbelief, sort of like "no way!" or "you're kidding!" in English). For example, if someone claimed to have scored a perfect 100 on a very hard test (that almost no one gets perfectly), you might say, somewhat doubtingly, "真的假的?”

Your intuition is right about what a longer form of the expression might be. It could also be a shortened form of "是真的還是假的???”

Not really ask true or false, but expressed surprise!Like “Really?!”
