Why do we need "has" in "society has become"

 

In the sentence "Nowadays our society has become very consumer-oriented", why do we need the verb "has" between society and become. Thanks for answer.

    Because tense Present Perfect was used, to emphasize the difference between the past and the present, the change of society. One thing relates to the other, that's why Present Perfect fits better.
    Its grammar structure looks like that:
    Person + have + verb (Past Participle) + rest of the sentence
    I have never been to NY.
    She has eaten so much! Now she's sick.

    "has" is an auxiliary verb indicating the passive or, as another user mentioned, the present perfect.
