Why an inverted sentence here?

"But he got a warm welcome as did the weapons package he took with him."

Why not:
"... as the weapons package he took with him did."

    Well, you have two statements, and the second statement depends on the first statement's existence.

    As the second statement is elliptical, you use the inverted form. If you use the direct form, you've actually begun a different topic and your sentence is broken.

    ...he got a warm welcome and (the weapons package he took with him) got a warm welcome too.
    I bought an icecream, as did you.
    I understand the sentence, as do you.
