How would you explain this sentence?

So I took the railroad tracks, roughly following the old Danville line northeast toward the city.

How would you explain this sentence? I think it means he took the railway, the railway was roughly following the old Danville line and the old Danville line was northeast to the city. Am I right?
Thanks!

Sounds like they were walking along the tracks heading north east towards the city, and this also happened to be the route a train used to take to the city but no more, with the route being called the Danville line.

He didn't take the train. He walked along the tracks.
