    I think it's the same. However, 'a lot of' can be use with both countable and uncountable nouns whereas 'many' can only be use with countable nouns (many books), and we use 'much' for uncountable nouns (much time).

    A lot of is just less formal. If you are writing something formal, use many. If you are speaking or jotting a note, either is fine, but you would possibly hear "a lot of" more often.
