    I agree with Susan - it's to make the person count the numbers at a regular pace (usually one number per second) and not too quickly.

    Other versions include "one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand..." and "one kangaroo, two kangaroo, three kangaroo..."

    Because it takes about a second to say "One Mississippi".
