I am sorry

to apologize, they have the same meaning,对不起 is a little more official. 不好意思 has some ohter meanings like excuse me.

Of course, you can use both of them in daily life when you trouble sb. or do sth. feel shame...
But, when you do really a very terrible thing and hurt, sorrow sb. very can only use "对不起。"
    for example:
    1. You want to ask the way, you say:
    2. You step on sb. on a bus, you can say:
    3. You kill sb's mother, you say:我对不起你...(If you use "不好意思"here, it means you think "kill his mother" is a small thing!)

I agree with brook, 不好意思= exuse me, 对不起=sorry
You can say both of them in your respon. You know someone likes say 对不起,someone likes say 不好意思。Threre is no a quite different between them.I think that it is just a habit.
