hi!!please help me with framing the sentence

it brings happiness to otherwise sad faces.
or he lit up the otherwise dark room
if these sentences are correct, i dont understand how do we use otherwise here

it could have been like: it brings happiness to the sad faces
he lit up the dark room

what does otherwise mean here and how to use it in sentences

    ''Otherwise'' is used in these examples to add more emphasis in the phrases.

    It brings happiness to otherwise sad faces.= It brings hapiness to faces that are generally sad.
    He lit up the otherwise dark room. = The room would be generally described as dark. But his presence in the room changed that.

    So let's say that I had a very busy day. I was taking exams, worked, went shopping, etc. But, at some point, I found the chance to relax and take a nap. What I could say in this situation about the nap is:
    ''It was a relaxing moment in this otherwise busy day''
    I could also say:''It was a relaxing moment in this busy day''.
    ''Otherwise'' just makes the whole statement more dramatic, in my opinion.
