What's the difference between <Adjective verb + 던> and <Adjective verb + ~ 았 (었) + 던>

For example : 깨끗했던 방 and 개끗하던 방. Both seem to mean the same ㅠㅠ
Can someone help me to clarify the difference?

던 means already past tense so both means same.
You use them interchangeably and wont make any difference at all.
