Backlash? I didn't get it.

I am reading a piece of news concerning same sex marriage. In the last paragraph appears "But that could have provoked a backlash, just as Roe did. " What does backlash mean here? Following is the last paragraph But that could have provoked a backlash, just as Roe did. The court’s narrow, technical ruling keeps the fight for gay marriage at the state level, where supporters have been winning. When California’s voters approved Proposition 8 in 2008, gay marriage was legal in just two states: California and Massachusetts. Today it is legal in 13, plus the District of Columbia, with more to come. Here is the link to the news. http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2013/06/gay-marriage

Backlash means unintended consequences opposite of what is intended. In this case, it means that the result might be to strengthen the resolve of the opposition - the proponents of traditional marriage.
