لم LAM is a jussive and negative particle, it precedes the present verb only, making the verb negative in the past.
لم أسمع ما قلته I didn't hear what you said.
لم أذهب إلى العمل اليوم I didn't go to work today.
You can't say: لم ذهبت past, لم سأذهب future, لم أذهب imperative.
The interrogative negative is ألم alam: ألم تذهب؟ didn't you go?
The same spelling has a number of different meanings with different pronunciations:
    - لِمَ؟ lima : why ? An abbreviation for لماذا؟
    - لُمَّ lamma : he gathered. لمَّ أوراقه : He gathered his papers. لُمَّ lumma is the imperative.
    - لُمْ lum : Blame, imperative. لُمْ نفسك قبل أن تلوم الآخرين : Blame yourself before blaming others.
