If you want to learn korean you would be taught Seoul standard korean. North korea uses some older/different words because they reject english loan-words and favor chinese influenced sino-korean and native korean terms, and they also have been separated from south so language has developed slightly differently though a person from south and north can understand each other. Of course seoul standard korean is the most widely used since north is a hermit country which has not spread language, and the dialect differences between regions of south korea need some standard form of korean to understand each other. Example: my teacher and her husband are from different province areas and so had a hard time understanding each other, so they both had to learn seoul standard.
