友達に手紙を書いて、勉強します。

I mean it to be something like "I will write a letter to my friend, then study."

Have I written that?

    I dont strong in Japanese. Just offer my version...

    私は友達に手紙を書きましょ。
    私と友達は勉強しましょ。

    I would say

    友達に手紙を書きます。それから勉強します。

    I think this is perfectly right, actually.

    I think it's right too, but I would drop the comma

    It's correct but you can say "友達に手紙を書いてから勉強します。" like Ms Kara said.It's better.
    Because"友達に手紙を書いて、勉強します。"might cause ambiguity. Some Japanese might misread as a "I study by writing a letter to a friend."
