오만 가지 수단을 다 쓰다

I found this expression in a dictionary.

오만 가지 수단을 다 쓰다
to try every possible means

오만 means "various" or "all kinds", 가지 means "a kind" and 수단 means "means" or "ways".

1) Why isn't it 오만 가지의 수단 ? I feel like it should have "of" in it.

2) If I took 다 out of the above expression, it would mean "to try various possible means (but not all)... 맞아요?

Another similar expression.

온갖 수당을 다 쓰다
to try every possible means

온갖 means "all kinds" or "every possible"

3) Why is 가지 missing from this example?

4) If 온갖 means "every possible", why is 다 necessary in this expression?

Finally, there is this example.

갖가지 종류의 꽃
various kinds of flowers

5) Why are 가지 and 종류 in this together? Don't they mean the same thing?

6) Could I replace 다 with 전부 or 모든 in the first two sentences?

감사합니다! (that was a long question :( )

    오만 가지 수단을 다 쓰다
    to try every possible means

    1) Why isn't it 오만 가지의 수단 ? I feel like it should have "of" in it.

    - Yes, the word 오만(五萬) means "whole", "entire" or "every", literally it means "fifty thousand", though.

The particle "의" is usually omitted in Korean when two or more nouns are combined or when speaking in a spoken. For examples,

    오만 가지(의) 수단과 방법
    100 가지(의) 약초
    대한민국(의) 국립박물관

    2) If I took 다 out of the above expression, it would mean "to try various possible means (but not all)... 맞아요?

    - No, in above sentence the adverb 다 is used just to emphasize the predicate. Although it leaves out, the meaning of the sentence is not changed at all.

    3) Why is 가지 missing from this example?
    4) If 온갖 means "every possible", why is 다 necessary in this expression?

    - The adverb 온갖 also means "every sort of", "all kinds of", "온" is the native Korean word, meaning "one hundred", and "갖" is contracted word of "가지(a kind or sort)".

You can say "온갖 수단을 쓰다" or "온갖 수단을 다 쓰다". As above question, the adverb 다 is used just to emphasize the predicate.

    갖가지 종류의 꽃
    various kinds of flowers

    5) Why are 가지 and 종류 in this together? Don't they mean the same thing?

    - The noun "갖가지" is contracted word of "가지가지(noun)", It means "여러 가지(all sorts/kinds)". In this case, "갖가지(noun) + 종류(noun)의" is modify the word "꽃". Therefore, "갖가지 종류의 꽃" means "다양한 종류의 꽃". You should note that "갖가지" is a noun, not an adverb.

    6) Could I replace 다 with 전부 or 모든 in the first two sentences?

    - Of course, The adverbs "다", "전부", "모두" can be replaced with each other. However, the word "모든" is an prenoun(an adjective in English), so we can't use "모든" with them.
