the answer shd be:

mais il n'en achete pas.... or

mais il ne l'achete pas.......?

i think the second one is more correct?!

    Both sentences are gramatically correct, but the "right" answer is "mais il ne l'achete pas".

    "En" would mean the quantity of present to buy is not precise, whereas "le" means there is only one present to buy, which is what what suggested by the question.

    The difference between the 2 answers is very small (and as I said none are fundamentally wrong) so I would nt feel the need to correct a student on this. I feel the book you are using is a bit pedantic. Take it easy and have fun!
