what does "cut a bloody path"mean?

It was in 1919 that touring by automobile caught on, especially among the affluent who could afford a chauffeur. Boy Capel became one of the first victims among those said to be afflicted by a "contagious madness." The handsome Boy was killed on December 24 of that year. A news agency dispatch gave the facts: "Captain Capel was traveling from Paris. He was on his way to Cannes when a tire on his automobile blew out." With the death of Boy, the killer car cut a bloody path into high society.
