How do you say " to smell" in french? The translator keeps coming up with sentir - but doesn't that mean to feel?

    "to feel" et "to smell" se traduisent tous deux en français par : sentir.
    Mais "to feel" signifie "avoir la sensation / le sentiment que..." on reste dans le domaine des sentiments. "I feel good" = je me sens bien. On utilise même volontiers le mot "feeling" dans le langage courant.
    "to smell" signifie "sentir une odeur, un parfum" mais aussi "dégager une (bonne ou maivaise) odeur". On sent avec le nez. "it smells bad" = ça sent mauvais / ça pue

     

    Just to recapitulate it simply :

    ça + sent = it smells
    Subject + verb + something (ex : je sens une drôle d'odeur)= I smell ...
    Subject + verb + que (ex : je sens que la situation se détériore) = I feel that...
    Subject + pronoun + verb (ex : je me sens mal) = I feel ...
