I really liked the Assimil series of language learning books. They have books that teach many different languages, but they are a French company, so there books that teach French are particularly well done. I used the version that teaches French in English, but they also have on that teaches French using Russian :) http://fr.assimil.com/methodes/frantsuzskii-bez-truda-segodnya

For grammar, Bescherelle is a really good book.
