立命 is only used in Classical Literary Chinese, an once Lingua Franca in East Asia that derived from Old Chinese before the Qin Dynasty (221BC). It is weird for a person to use this word in Mordern Mandarin, though educated people can understand it.

It means 'to fulfill one's dream', or 'have something spiritual to pursue'.

we hardly use this word in daily life ,especially in oral chinese.
