    I think it is scientifically and linguistically better to use any of a number of synonyms that mean "increase."

    Exercise increases your metabolism.
    Exercise boosts your metabolism.
    Exercise revs up your metabolism.
    Exercise speeds up your metabolism.
    Exercise raises your metabolism.

    Not knowing the science I am not sure but "improves" sounds better than "strengthens". Improves = makes better which is more likely to be right than makes stronger.
