when do i use den and der on a sentence?

    You use 'den' in front of a substantive like when you say in English that dog, you would in Danish say 'den hund'
    But in Danish it would change between 'den' and 'det' depending on the substantive.
    The word 'der', is used like there. Like ' there is nobody here' would be in Danish ' der er ingen her'
    Does it make any sense at all?
