How do you use the "de" form in French?

I am aware that this might be complex to explain. If somebody could provide a link to a grammar resource then I would be highly grateful!

(I'll try to answer however I may be missing some points.)

It is used as "of", "from", "by".
    E.g.:
    - Perfume of lavender = parfum de lavande
    - Merovech was from the tribe of the Franks = Mérovée était de la tribu des Francs
    - 'They Live' is a great film by John Carpenter = 'Invasion Los Angeles' est un grand film de John Carpenter
