Resolved questions
Vietnamese "how" and "how to"

I have two questions, but since they are very similar, I decided to join them in the same thread.

Alright, so first question is:
1- Which are the most common words to express "how --> manner in which something is done"? The one I know is "làm sao", but is it shortened to "sao" only in speech?

Second question:
1- By making simple google searches, I realized that there was at least two ways to ask "how to"
a) Làm sao đế
b) Làm thế nào ̣đế

Is there a difference between the too? Also, is there another common way to ask "how to"?

Thank you!

Only in speech, “làm sao” (how) is shortened into “sao”. But “tại sao” (why) is shortened into “sao”, too. And “SAO” MEANS “WHAT”!!!!
In fact, there’s not the so-called “how” and “why” in Vietnamese language. We just have “what”. And then, “how” and “why” are made based on “what”

    1. Sao = what

    2. Tại sao = why: Tại = 为 = because of; sao = 什么 = what. => tại sao = 为什么 = BECAUSE OF WHAT

    3. Làm sao = how: làm = do; sao = what => làm sao = DO WHAT
    * Cái bánh này ăn làm sao? (이케이크가 어떻게 먹어요?) = WHAT do I DO to eat this cake? (How do I eat this cake? = How is this cake eaten? -> manner)
    * Làm sao bạn biết chuyện này? = WHAT did you DO to know this? (How did you know this? -> manner)

    4. SAO = WHAT = WHY = HOW (which means both LIKE WHAT and MANNER in which ST is done)
    * Bạn nói sao? = WHAT did you say?
    * Sao nó phải đi? = WHY must he go?
    * Nó sao rồi? (HOW is he? -> like what)
    * Sao bạn biết chuyện này? = HOW did you know this? (manner) = WHY do you know this?

    A bit confusing, isn’t it?

    * In questions: làm sao để = làm (như) thế nào để = how to do ST?
    * In affirmative: CÁCH + verb = How to do ST = the way to do ST

    a. Làm sao để: Làm = do; sao = what; để = to, in order to
=> Làm sao để = DO WHAT TO
Làm sao để ăn cái bánh này? = WHAT should I DO TO eat this cake?

    b. Làm (như) thế nào để: Làm = do; (như = like); thế nào = what/which; để = to, in order to
=> Làm (như) thế nào để = DO (LIKE) WHAT TO
Làm thế nào để ăn cái bánh này? = (LIKE) WHAT should I DO TO eat this cake?

Therefore, “Làm sao để” is the same as “Làm thế nào để” BUT “làm sao để” is informal while the rest is formal.
