    Hi,
    I would say 一歩近づく(いっぽちかづく) 、一歩進む(すすむ)、一歩前進する(ぜんしんする)
    "I'm a (or 1) step closer to finishing my task now"
    --> 仕事を終わらせることに一歩近づいた。(仕事の終了に向けて一歩前進した。)

    "I'm a (or 1) step closer to leaving to (or: my trip to) Japan"
    --> 日本へ(の旅にむけて)一歩近づいた。
