What is the meaning of となって?

I saw a sentence:
光が刺激となって花が咲く

But it seems
光が刺激、花が咲く
would convey a similar meaning (at least for me)

So, what's the difference? What do we need the となって?

    それは、'' 光 becomes a 刺激、 so 花が咲く ''です。
    もしくは、'' as 光 becomes a 刺激、 花が咲く。''
    ’ なって ' originally is ' なる ', which means ' to become '
