Las palabras femeninas que empiezan por "a tónica" (con la fuerza en la primera sílaba) y que son femeninas usan el artículo "el" porque no suena bien "la + agua =lagua". Pero son femeninas. Por eso es el agua fría. Si pones "fría" entre "agua" y su artículo, aparece "la" = "la fría agua". Solo es con el artículo. Se debe decir: esta agua, no "este agua".
Otras palabras que funcionan igual = águila, alma, aula... Son femeninas pero usan el artículo "el"

Words like agua that begin with "a" don't take "la/una" because the two sounds "la agua" don't sound well together. The word is still feminine gender and so adjectives must agree with its being feminine. If there's a word between indefinite article and the noun, then you should use the feminine article.
    Consider this:
    El aula (The classroom)
    El amplio aula

As for programa, words that end in ma/pa/ta are of Greek origin and are for some reason 99% masculine.
    El planet/El programa/El mapa

La crema "cream" might seem like an exception, but in reality it doesn't come from Greek, but rather from French.

    Espero haberte ayudado.
