    1. He transcended their negative comments about how he would never lose any weight and stuck to his gym routine. Within eight months he had lost 40 pounds and everyone that gave him shit for it was amazed at his progress.

    Here it means to rise above the stupid comments others make and ignore all the negativity to achieve your goals.

     

    2. Merriam-Webster is a subsidiary of Encyclopedia Britannica.

    It means that Encyclopedia Britannica owns Merriam-Webster. We would say that EB is its "parent company".

    Using it as an adjective.

    When Microsoft bought Lingua Chat, it also acquired all of Lingua Chat's subsidiary companies.
