2. Merriam-Webster is a subsidiary of Encyclopedia Britannica.
It means that Encyclopedia Britannica owns Merriam-Webster. We would say that EB is its "parent company".
Using it as an adjective.
When Microsoft bought Lingua Chat, it also acquired all of Lingua Chat's subsidiary companies.
