How Behind Are Other Countries On Receiving American Music? Hahaha. I only ask this question because my coworker from Russia keeps playing all these American songs from the 60's and 70's and it is driving me nuts. I wonder if the reason he doesn't play any contemporary American music (hell even something from the 80's or 90's would be welcome) is because he was only ever exposed to the older stuff or whether this is just a personal preference of his. Someone save me! PLEASE! LOL! And if anyone out there is learning American English, please stick with modern American music so if you ever come to the States, you can connect with people here. Just a little advise to fit in. Buahahahaha! :)

I think perhaps you are being a bit generationist! Although serious music fans do actively follow music trends, a lot of people keep listening to the music that was popular when they were in their late teens. Not only that, I think that they tend to keep wearing the clothing that was popular then too. I certainly still listen to 70s and 80s music. Although some of the 90's stuff is OK, anything since sounds really bland to me. And there's a fair chance you will still be listening to the same music you listen to now, in 20 years time too. There's a thought that comes out of those beliefs that really disturbs me, but thankfully I won't be around to see if it comes to fruition... That is that the men that were born in the 80s that wear their pants slung really low, showing off their underwear, will still be doing the same when they are in their 80's and 90's... truly disturbing...

I think one factor may have been the prohibition of "western" music for so many years. I find this in Slovakia as well - the people here are simply catching up. ;) Many of the hits in the US/UK/etc from the 70s and 80s were re-recorded and sung by local singers at the time because there was no way for the public here to hear the original song. Well, that's how it rolled just east of Vienna...
