What does " strokes taken off their scores" mean? Golf may be the only sport in which people of different ability can compete fairly. That's because "handicapping" allows golfers to have strokes taken off their scores depending on the quality of their game and the difficulty of the courses on which they're playing. What does " strokes taken off their scores" mean?

I'm not a golfer but i'll try to help. In golf your score is calculated by adding up strokes. 1 stroke = 1 point. A stroke is every time you swing your golf club and hit the ball. If strokes are taken off they take off 'points' and act like the strokes never happened.

The point in golf is to get the LOWEST score possible. So taking strokes off their score gives a golfers a better score.
