There is a very old, medieval city called "Provins" that is not far from Paris. It has beautiful houses dating all the way back to the 10th and 11th centuries, as well as old fortifications around the city. They also have an incredible renaissance festival there each summer. In the southeastern part of France, there is an entire region called Provence where you will find a large portion of the Alpes in the eastern portion. This region also contains many famous French cities that you are probably already familiar with, such as: Orange, Avignon, Marseille, Toulon, Cannes (where they have the internationally renowned Cannes Film Festival), and Nice.

Here "province" is in contrast with "capital". For people who live in Paris, I live "en province".
