    胎 is referred to as the inner part of something, for example 爆胎 means your bike tyre tube(s) is/are exploded. 内胎 = inner tyre tube.

    That's why it's called a 胎儿, because the mom "contains" the baby. Normally 胎 = 胎儿, but they are not always interchangeable.

    whether you put 儿 or not is depend on dialect however, there are certain vocabularies you can or have to put 儿 in standard Chinese.
