How to strike on a conversation with a foreigner? I mean except the "how are you",or "what a nice day"... Is there a more appropriate way to get a foreigner interested?

I have never actuall done this but have often wanted to: In California there are a lot of people that in public speak Spanish, Korean or Vietnamese and I have often wanted to ask them what language they are speaking when it is not obvious. That would break the ice and would allow for a little bit of conversation and if they are interested, possibly lessons. I've never done it because I'm sort of shy but it is a good thought.

A good way to get to practice English often might be to join an English speaking group. There may be a language group for people learning Chinese near where you live. You could join that group and do a language exchange. Or, if there are a lot of foreigners near you, join a casual sports team. Find a way to join a group and that will give you something to talk about. In general I would suggest being honest and explaining you want to practice and learn.

It is probably similar to starting a conversation with anyone. Talk about the things you are interested in. Find something that you both have in common. If you meet someone on Italki, you are both learning a second (or third) language.
