"This" is the word used when describing something near to the speaker. For example, if you were holding a fork and talking about it, you'd say "this fork". "That" is used for objects not near the speaker. If you were talking about a fork that was not within reaching distance, or someone else holds it, you'd say "that fork". why should we talk about them ?
