Does "bose mitspielen" mean the same as "übel mitspielen"?

I was reading an article about the movie Maleficent and I came across a sentence which baffled me.

Maleficent ist bei Stromberg keine böse Fee, sondern eine, der böse mitgespielt worden ist.

I don't quite understand what does "böse mitgespielt worden ist" mean here. I looked up the verb "mitspielen" in the dictionary and found that it means "play along"and "act( in a film/play)". And I also found the phrase "j-m übel mitspielen" which means "play a low-down trick" or "frame".
So I wanted to know whether "böse mitspielen" mean the same as "übel mitspielen"?
