How would you explain ‘wooden blocks’ in the context?

A canoe swept by carrying marimba players, two men in white shirts standing side by side at their long instrument of wooden blocks, rolling their hands over the rippling wooden notes.

How would you explain ‘wooden blocks’ in the context?
Thanks!

Hello my friend,I asked wikipedia to answer your question:
The marimba (/məˈrɪmbə/) is a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets to produce musical tones. Resonators attached to the bars amplify their sound. The bars are arranged as those of a piano, with the accidentals raised vertically and overlapping the natural bars (similar to a piano) to aid the performer both visually and physically. This instrument is a type of idiophone, but with a more resonant and lower-pitched tessitura than the xylophone.

A marimba is a musical instrument made up of wooden blocks. If you do a google images search on marimba you will be able to see that the author means.
