There are seven speech levels in Korean.
The style of ending verb with 다 is called haera-che.
Haera-che is used
1. to close friends or relatives of similar age, and by adults to children
2. in impersonal writing (books, newspapers, and magazines) and indirect quotations ("She said that...")
3. in grammar books, to give examples
4. in some exclamations
